Child & Adolescent Therapy
including infants & toddlers

Like adults, children as young as a toddler can go through different life challenges. These challenges could be as simply as changing of morning and bedtime routine or sleep arrangement to reaching age-appropriate developmental milestones like teething, starting schools.

Sometimes, what is considered to be positive life changes for parents like moving homes, having a sibling, or parents getting a new job could be an unexpected or devastating life changes for children.

For some children, unfortunately events like the loss of pet or a carer due to relocation or the loss of parent due to marital dispute and other reasons can be unbearable psychologically.

Unlike adults, however, children express themselves more effectively through play, emotions, and behaviours. It is indeed developmentally appropriate for younger ones to express through these means.

When children believe that they have tried using the aforementioned means to articulate themselves and not being heard or understood, they would try to “amplify” what messages they were trying to convey.

Often times, adults may not have the necessary skills to “decode” what the child was trying to say, creating this “vicious” cycle of parent-child communication pattern which could be detrimental to the parent-child-relationship, parents’ and the child’s mental well-being, and overall development of the child and the family.
CHILD &

ADOLESCENT THERAPY
If you are unsure whether your child’s issues would necessarily require a formal consultation or follow-up treatment, the following questions would guide you to make such difficult decision:

1.  Has the concern(s) that you have for your child been on your mind for a considerable amount of time? (Each parent would have a different definition on what is “a considerable amount of time”, if your mind has been wandering around the same issue to a point that makes you worry or thinking about doing something about it, your answer is possibly a yes)

2.  Have you noticed any changes in your child’s sleeping, dreaming and eating/feeding pattern?

3.  Have you noticed any noticeable increase or decrease in the child’s play motivation, school motivation, energy level, or others activities that he/she used to enjoy or have an interested in?

4.  Did other caregivers of your child also make comments or share similar observations of your concerns?

5.  Has the concern(s) that you have for your child affected any daily functioning of yours or your partners’?

If your answer is “yes” to three or more of the above questions, you are encouraged to make an appointment with myself for further inquiries. When the first consultation is completed, you will be given:

1.  A detail account on what might be the root cause for the presenting concern.
2.  Recommendation on whether child therapy, play therapy, parent-child therapy, parents’ consultation, would be necessary to address your concerns for your child.
3.  If follow-up interventions are needed, what will be the course of treatment.
4.  You will be informed on treatment options prior to the commitment for service.
5.  Recommendation on parenting strategies in terms of:
•  Interacting tips on communicating with your child
•  Play activities and other related activities to work with your child
•  Step-by-step instruction on addressing children’s presenting concerns.
6.  An estimated timeline in ameliorating the current situation.
7.  Other suggestions pertaining to children development.Parenting tips on prevention or that promote healthy development.

Sometimes, it is not uncommon to see that parents and children coming for just one-consultation would be able to ameliorate the manifestation of the child’s emotional and behavioral symptoms.

With the necessary skills and case conceptualization, I will help “translate” the language of the child’s play, emotion, and behavior to a language that an adult and parent without psychological training would understand.
